Prayer flags are needed for the forthcoming exhibition “Infinite – Heavenward” at the Haus der Seidenkultur

“Infinite – Heavenward” is the title of the exhibition which will open at the Haus der Seidenkultur (HdS) in February 2012.  On show will be prayer flags representing different religions “not flapping separately in the wind but united as a sea of flags” according to Professor Annette Pöllmann.
The curator who has already collected more than 600 examples envisages “a canopy of colourful flags”. “A whole range of different people have made the flags from ladies belonging to a senior citizens’ group, lecturers on textile engineering from the Vera Becker Vocational College right up to international artists”, explains Ms. Pöllmann.  “The youngest were 15 years old and the oldest 95”.
“Everyone can take part” says Ms. Pöllmann, encouraging people to have their own (prayer) flag blowing in “Infinite – Heavenward”. The flags should be 30 x 40 cm in size and without a seam. The artists can allow their phantasy free reign when it comes to colour and design. The wealth of ideas can be seen at a glance from the flags which have already been submitted. Ms. Pöllmann is pleased about the wide variety of textile techniques used: cloth remnants have been embroidered, sewn together, plaited or cut out”. Having been professor for textile art at the textile engineering college and the University of the Lower Rhine, the curator naturally has a good eye for the “material whose purpose is to transmit a message to the celestial sphere”.

Flags can be accepted by HdS until the end of September. They should be sent to:
Förderverein Haus der Seidenkultur, Am Verschubbahnhof 57, 47809 Krefeld,
indicating the name of the sender and consent to public display. Contributions can also be handed in at the above address during normal working hours.
