A Suitcase from the USA brought unexpected Treasures to Haus der Seidenkultur in Krefeld

Textiles and documents which have made history can be seen in the current (temporary) exhibition “Ein Koffer Samt und Seide” (A Suitcase of Silk and Velvet) at Haus der Seidenkultur (HdS). They relate the exciting history of the company and of the family of Hubert Gotzes who, in the year 1908, founded the weaving factory for ecclesiastical textiles (now the museum) in Luisenstrasse 15.

“We will have to partially re-write and add to our historical records”, says HdS spokesperson, Dieter Brenner. New (historical) insights literally landed on the table when the American great-granddaughter of Hubert Gotzes visited Krefeld with her family during a journey through Europe. And she did not come empty-handed: she bequeathed HdS a suitcase full of textiles and documents which are now being studied and evaluated in depth by Dr. Ulrike Denter from HdS.

From this bequest, Ulrike Denter has selected some 80 exhibits for the exhibition which she is curating. “Until now we assumed that Hubert Gotzes sent his son of the same name to Chicago in 1914 where he was to set up a branch of the Krefeld-based weaving factory for ecclesiastical textiles”, says Ms. Denter. However: We now know that the actual task of Hubert Gotzes jun. was to get back into shape a company located in the USA which had previously been managed from Europe.”

The son remained in the USA and started a family whose descendants have now brought part of the bequest to Krefeld: Valuable textiles, pattern sheets, passport documents and letters which give a unique and exciting insight into the previously undisclosed family and business history of the Gotzes.

“It is incredible what the small suitcase contains”, says Ilka Neumann, who as graphic artist and design specialist was principally responsible for the exhibition set-up as was Achim Wahl, who produced a film about the visit from America for an impressive media presentation. Another reason to visit this amazing exhibition which – as Brenner emphasized to the press – “has been organised solely by volunteers.”
