Silk Lustre and Global Textiles
Krefeld Museums of Art and Haus der Seidenkultur cooperate to offer workshops for children during autumn holidays
“Silk Lustre and Global Textiles” is the title of the holiday workshops being offered during the autumn holidays by the Museums of Art in Krefeld in cooperation with Haus der Seidenkultur (HdS). “We want to link the history of silk weaving to the practical handling of precious silk cloth” says Christel Naber, HdS museum educationalist, describing the content of the workshops in a nutshell. And Thomas Janzen (Krefeld Museums of Art) adds that in the museum Haus Esters purely artistic, aesthetic aspects play an important role alongside the technical and industrial issues.
The youngsters therefore first visit the exhibition “10 x10” by the Italian artist Rossella Biscotti at the Museum Haus Esters (Wilhelmshofallee 97). As a Mies van der Rohe scholar, Rossella Biscotti studied the history of silk weaving in an unusual manner. The youngsters go on an exciting journey into Krefeld‘s textile past and also encounter the current issues and problems. There are many puzzles to be resolved around textiles, patterns, silk producers and numerous other things. The threads of the exhibition will be taken up to develop ideas and designs, to put them on paper and to work with textiles.
On the third and fourth days the workshop takes place at Haus der Seidenkultur in Luisenstraße 15. Here the children learn how the silkworm becomes a silk thread and can watch the silk thread being unwound from the cocoon. Working on the “Living Loom” and creative development of silk products are also part of the programme.
The silk items which the children have woven and made by hand will be on show from 15.00 hours in Haus Esters (1st floor) on the final day of each workshop (Fri 10.10. and 15.10.) and children and parents can collect them there from16.00 hours
In the first week of the holiday from Oct.7th. to Oct.10th, the workshop is for youngsters from 5 to 9 years of age. On Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct.7./8.) it will be held from 11.00 – 13.00 hours in Museum Haus Esters and on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 9./10.) from 10.00 to 13.00 hours at Haus der Seidenkultur. In the second week of the holidays the same workshop will be tailored to the needs of youngsters aged 10 to 14 years. Again it starts in Museum Haus Esters on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct.14./15.) from 11.00 – 13.00 hours and continues on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 16./17.) from 10.00 to 13.00 hours at Haus der Seidenkultur.
