“Silk Culture” in Schwanenmarkt
(Seiden)”Kultur findet Stadt(t)” in the first week of July
For one whole week, Haus der Seidenkultur (HdS) can be found in the Schwanenmarkt. On the shopping days from 1st to 6th July, HdS will have a stand in the activities area in the Schwanenmarkt from 10.00 to 19.00 hours.
“Our aim is to present the textile past of Krefeld as living history“, says HdS spokesman Dieter Brenner describing the wide-ranging programme designed for both young and old..
From 10.00 to 14.00 hours, point paper designer, Günter Göbels, will demonstrate how the pattern is transferred to the loom and Manfred Weisters will explain the different phases from silkworm to silk thread whilst reeling thread from cocoons.
At 14.30 hours Christel Naber, museum educationalist, will open a free Shibori workshop for children and youngsters. Participants will be let into the secret of the Asiatic art of binding textiles to dye them and everyone will be able to take home with them their own dyed cloth to show off the result.
In addition, on sale will be scarves and neckties made of high quality silk and with historic patterns which were once woven at the Hubert Gotzes weaving workshop for ecclesiastical textiles (now HdS). Each item purchased has a certificate in which the significance and the origin of the pattern are described in detail.
Other items on the programme organised by “Haus der Seidenkultur” in the Schwanenmarkt as part of “Kultur findet Stadt(t)” include a Krefeld quiz and the clip-clap which master manual weaver Günter Oehms generates from his 100-year old foot treadle floor loom.
Master manual weaver Oehms will also be taking part in “Silk Culture” in Schwanenmarkt.
